Send a password-protected file transfer for free
Several services lock password protection behind paid tiers or only gate the web page. Here, adding a password is free and encrypts the files before upload.
- Included on the 6 GB free plan with no account
- A password encrypts the files before they leave your browser
- The password is never written into the notification email
- Server stores only a salted hash and a wrapped key it cannot unwrap
- Combine with link expiry from 1 hour to 7 days on free
A cryptographic lock, not just a page gate
When you compare file transfer services, check what a download password actually does. On 23 October 2026 Dropbox Transfer’s help article listed password protection as a customization feature for higher paid tiers rather than Dropbox Basic, and Wormhole’s public roadmap still listed optional password protection under future work.
On SendToAnyone, you can turn on a password on any free 6 GB transfer with no account. A password encrypts the files before they leave the browser. It is not in the email. A link without a password keeps the key in the link. We cannot read those files. The server stores a salted hash to verify the password prompt and a wrapped key that cannot be unwrapped without the password you typed.
How to share the link and the password safely
A password only protects a transfer if the link and the password travel on different channels. If you email the download link through SendToAnyone or paste the URL into a Slack or WhatsApp group, send the password separately by SMS, a voice call, or a direct message to the intended person.
Because the notification email never includes your password and the server cannot decrypt your wrapped key, there is no "forgot transfer password" recovery button. Keep a copy of the password until the recipient confirms they have downloaded the files. If you lose the password, you will need to create a new transfer from your original files.
Larger encrypted transfers and honest security limits
Password encryption does not change the transfer size cap. Free is 6 GB for up to 7 days. Creator raises the cap to 50 GB and 30 days for ₹299 or $3.99 monthly or ₹3,199 or $39.99 yearly. A Pass covers one 100 GB transfer for 30 days at ₹199 or $2.49. Pro covers 250 GB per transfer and 1 year for ₹999 or $10.99 monthly or ₹10,499 or $109.99 yearly, after payment is confirmed.
The upload scan checks the file name and the first few kilobytes before encryption and cannot detect every kind of malware or pirated file. Files travel over HTTPS and sit on global cloud storage until expiry. Turning encryption off leaves files encrypted in transit and at rest. An independent operator based in India runs the site, and the service is not yet certified. Team checkout is not open, and Studio and Business say Contact sales.
