File transfer and upload time calculator

Enter a file size in MB or GB and your connection speed in Mbps to estimate realistic browser upload and download times.

How file transfer time is calculated

File sizes are measured in bytes (MB or GB), while internet speeds are rated in bits per second (Mbps). Because 1 byte equals 8 bits, a 100 Mbps upload line moves at most 12.5 megabytes per second on raw wire. In a real web browser, HTTPS framing, TCP acknowledgments, and 16 MB multipart chunking add roughly 10% to 15% overhead.

At a sustained 100 Mbps upload speed with realistic browser overhead, a 1 GB file takes about 1 minute 30 seconds, a 6 GB free transfer takes about 9 minutes, a 50 GB Creator transfer takes about 1 hour 15 minutes, and a 100 GB Pass transfer takes about 2 hours 30 minutes.

Matching your file size to a transfer plan

Transfers up to 6 GB (6,000,000,000 bytes) are free on SendToAnyone with no account and last up to 7 days. Creator raises the single-transfer limit to 50 GB for 30 days. A Pass covers one 100 GB transfer for 30 days without a recurring subscription. Pro covers up to 250 GB per transfer and 1,000 GB stored for 1 year after payment is confirmed.

Questions

Why is my upload slower than my advertised internet speed?

Most home broadband and mobile plans are asymmetric: download speeds are several times faster than upload speeds. Check your upload Mbps specifically when sending a large file.

How long does it take to upload a 6 GB file?

On a 100 Mbps upload connection, a 6 GB file takes about 9 minutes. On a 25 Mbps connection, a 6 GB file takes about 36 minutes.

What happens if my internet drops during a long 50 GB or 100 GB upload?

Files over 8 MB upload in 16 MB parts. Re-selecting the same file in the same browser resumes from the parts already stored.
